Words Endings for German Feminine (Die) Articles

Nouns ending in -ung, -heit, -keit, -schaft, -tät, -ion, -ik, or -ur are always die, such as die Zeitung (newspaper), die Freiheit (freedom), and die Information (information).

Words Endings for German Neuter (Das) Articles

-chen and -lein mark a diminutive and are always das, regardless of the word's original gender. Das Mädchen (girl) is das even though it names a female person, because the -chen ending overrides natural gender.

Words Endings for German Masculine (der) Articles

Male people and their professions are mostly der, such as der Bruder (brother) and der Arzt (male doctor). Days, months, and seasons are also der: der Montag, der Januar, der Sommer.

Why This Page Uses 89 Nouns Instead of One Rule?

No single rule predicts a German noun's gender with full accuracy - the patterns above cover a large share of cases, but exceptions exist. This list gives 29 der-nouns, 30 die-nouns, and 30 das-nouns so the patterns become familiar through repetition rather than memorized as a formula.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a reliable rule for der, die, and das?+

Partially. Noun endings correctly predict gender in many cases, but German gender has enough exceptions that no single rule works 100% of the time.

Why is Mädchen (girl) das instead of die?+

Because it ends in -chen, a diminutive suffix that always takes das and overrides the word's natural gender.

Do plural nouns use der, die, or das?+

All plural German nouns use die in the nominative and accusative cases, regardless of their singular gender.
