Telling Time in German
Halb zehn means 9:30, not 10:30. German halb ('half') counts toward the next hour, not back from the last one - the single most common mistake English speakers make with German time.

Why Halb Points Forward Instead of Back?
English says 'half past nine,' looking backward at the hour that already happened. German says halb zehn, literally 'half of the way to ten,' looking forward at the hour still coming. Same moment in time, opposite mental direction.
Vor and Nach: Straightforward, Unlike Halb
Vor (before) and nach (after) work the way English speakers already expect: viertel nach neun is 9:15, viertel vor zehn is 9:45. These two only get confusing next to halb, which is why halb deserves the extra attention.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does halb zehn mean in German time?+
9:30, not 10:30. German halb counts toward the next hour rather than back from the previous one.
What's the difference between vor and nach?+
Nach means 'past' the hour, vor means 'to' the next hour - viertel nach neun is 9:15, viertel vor zehn is 9:45. Both work the way English speakers already expect.
Is 'Viertel acht' really 7:15?+
Only regionally - in parts of eastern Germany and Austria, Viertel acht (without nach) means 7:15, following the same 'counting toward' logic as halb. Elsewhere, say viertel nach sieben to avoid confusion.
