How to Say Thank You
in German

GTGermanVocabulary Team · Sep 24, 2026 · 3 min read

Danke works in almost any situation, casual or formal, spoken or written. The five variations on this page add either more formality (Vielen Dank) or more warmth (Tausend Dank) - they don't replace Danke, they adjust it.

Ways to say it

Danke
thanks — the everyday default

Danke für deine Hilfe.

Thanks for your help.

Danke schön
thank you very much — slightly warmer

Danke schön für das Geschenk.

Thank you very much for the gift.

Vielen Dank
thank you very much — polite, works in writing too

Vielen Dank für Ihre Nachricht.

Thank you very much for your message.

Danke sehr
thanks a lot

Danke sehr, das war sehr nett von Ihnen.

Thanks a lot, that was very kind of you.

Tausend Dank
a thousand thanks — enthusiastic, informal

Tausend Dank, du hast mir das Leben gerettet!

A thousand thanks, you saved my life!

Ich danke dir
I thank you — more formal/heartfelt phrasing

Ich danke dir für alles.

I thank you for everything.

Vielen Dank vs. Tausend Dank: Formal Isn't the Same as Warm

Vielen Dank ('many thanks') is the stronger, more formal choice - the one that fits the end of a professional email or a thank-you to someone you don't know well. Tausend Dank ('a thousand thanks') is actually less formal despite sounding bigger; it's for close friends, family, or a host after a genuinely great evening.

How to Reply When Someone Says Thanks You (Danke) in German?

The reply to Danke lives on its own page: Bitte, Gern geschehen, or Keine Ursache. Pairing Danke with its reply is really two separate phrases, not one fixed pair - see How to Say You're Welcome for the full breakdown of when to use each.

When Ich Danke Dir Fits Better Than Danke

Ich danke dir (or the formal Ich danke Ihnen) puts the gratitude into a full sentence instead of a single word, which reads as more personal and considered. Save it for something that actually deserves a full sentence, not a passed salt shaker.
